Directions


  1. Butter a 9" x 13" baking dish

  2. Cut the bread into 1-inch cubes and spread them on a pan while preparing the other items

  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the bacon until crisp and set aside. In the bacon-greased pan, add the onions and sauté for 5 minutes. Sprinkle the sugar over the onions and sauté an additional 3 minutes until golden brown, stirring so they do not stick

  4. Remove the onions, add the apples and celery and sauté for 5 to 7 minutes, then add the parsley, thyme, and sage along with the salt and pepper. Sauté for an additional minute

  5. Mix pan ingredients with the bread, eggs, and chicken broth in a separate bowl, then pour into the baking dish and bake for 45 minutes to an hour until the top is light and crusty
